Weekly Update, June 5-12, 2023

This Week at UUVerdugo

Oh golly, what a weekend. Not only was the UUVerdugo booth at Foothills Pride very popular (it might have had something to do with the fact that we gave out free beverages and also that my children look like the 90s band Hanson), but we grew our congregation by 25 percent on Annual Meeting Day.

Last Sunday’s Service

Annual Meeting Day dawned overcast but hopeful and by the end of the morning we had welcomed five new members. Welcome to enthusiastic visitors-turned-congregants Abby, Anna, Bill, Cathy, and Patriciaa—we are glad you’re here! And thanks to the many friends and community members who came to support our little church. We also welcomed incoming Board president Mary and Board secretary Florence.

This Sunday’s Service, June 11: The UU of Tom Petty

We are not claiming that the late American musician Tom Petty was a UU but, just like the uniquely American mishmash of Unitarianism and Universalism, the Pride of Gainesville had a questing spirit and a lot of hope. Our musical guest, Laura Joy, also claims Petty as a “personal spirit guide” and will share some stories between songs. Come for this “UU in Plain Sight” service and learn a little more about Petty’s love of UU coffee choices and the significance of “You believe what you wanna believe.”

This Friday, June 9

1Do you want to help Howard Richman cook and/or serve at Ascencia this Friday? Please contact Howard via hwrichman@yahoo.com. Food served in industrial casserole foil is, without question, the best food there is, because there’s a lot of it.

Next Week

June 14: Community meeting in the Sanctuary for the No Canyon Hills Development conservation effort. Contact Emma and Mateo at nocanyonhills@gmail.com for more info.

June 17: It’s HUUT time! With more Tom Petty! Bring your friends for this always-entertaining wingding featuring musicians from all over Los Angeles. This will be our last HUUT until September, so it behooves you to fill your HUUT cup while you can!
