Weekly Update, May 22-28, 2023

This Week at UUVerdugo

What a weekend! An open house, a HUUT, a fantastic service, and a recital. (And, not for nothing, we were visited by a dude named Oscar.)

Last Sunday’s Service

Clare Buchanan of Sunland-Tujunga Voices United visited to talk about June 3’s Foothills Pride 2023 (at which UUVerdugo will have a booth). I think I can speak for all in attendance when I say that this young woman’s speech was inspiring, powerful, and compelling, and I predict she will continue to inspire and compel in her studies and her career. Thanks, Clare!

Our Next Sunday Service, May 28: A Multitude of UUVerdugos

Prior to our annual meeting next week, we welcome new, long-time, and prospective members to share what they like and what they want from this "beloved community," Like a massive cruise ship but without the salmonella, UUVerdugo has room for many and inclusive activities throughout.

Wednesday, May 24—Movie Night! “Captain Fantastic”

Join us at 6 p.m. for a great film starring Viggo Mortensen as what can only be described as a homeschool dad and his extraordinary family’s journey through mainstream America. Pizza will be provided but please RSVP so we know how much to get. Suggested donation: $5.

Saturday, June 3: Foothills Pride 2023 (see above)

Sunday, June 4: UUVerdugo Annual Meeting

Congregants only, no service. The meeting will be held in Friendship Hall.

The Dunsmore/First Street Sign Gets Market-Corrected

Thanks, City of Glendale, for quickly attending to the latest car-or-human-or-chupacabra-inflicted assault on the trusty Dunsmore/First Street sign. It is now in a slightly-less-vulnerable place a few feet to the east (photo by Paula Hallowell).

OK, how is it that UUVerdugo was visited by an Academy Award?

Brian Smith, who was one of 900 people on the team that won the 2023 Visual Effects Oscar for James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" (as of this writing the third highest-grossing movie of all time) is married to Anna Smith, the director of Urban Homeschoolers, the progressive school that serves tots from eight to 18 at UUVerdugo. Brian got to take the Oscar for a week. It is, as everyone who wins one of those things will tell you, heavy! Brian carried it around in a steel-reinforced, heavily-padded case. We thought the best place for it would be on our baby grand in the sanctuary.
