Weekly Update: May 29-June 4, 2023

Normally I skip the weekly update when the monthly newsletter will be coming out, but there are some exciting changes to the advertised events of the coming weekend.

Last Sunday’s Service

The “Multitude of UUVerdugos” service featured helpful feedback about music (we want more of it) and thoughts about an increased ministerial presence to provide pastoral care for those that seek it. We have not sought pastoral care from recent ministers but we have utilized it in the past. While we celebrate why we are UUs in services every year, are we prepared to face the truth about why people leave this church? And should I, as the service leader, have been gentler in presenting feedback I’ve received from past ministers and congregants? Opinions were divided! It was an occasionally feisty morning that underlined the fact that there are many UUVerdugos; we need to care for the existing population as well as make prospective members and staff feel welcome.

This Sunday, June 4: ALL ARE WELCOME! The 2023 UUVerdugo Annual Meeting

Many of us were under the impression that annual meetings were for members only, but our own Alan Kleinsasser, in true UU fashion, asked “Why?” Furthermore, outgoing board president PPaula Hallowell said, “We have nothing to hide.” Excelsior! So bring your friends and see what a UUVerdugo annual meeting is like. Note: This meeting will be held, as it has been in recent years, downstairs from the Sanctuary in Friendship Hall. There will be coffee and snacks. This meeting will take the place of a service, although there will be traditional UU elements present, such as chalice lighting.

This Wednesday, May 31

10:30 a.m.: Reiki with Mary. The popular class continues, in-person (in Friendship Hall) or on Zoom. (Contact Mary via meladillyut@gmail.com)

1:15 p.m.: UUtheVOTE kickoff for Gun Safety legislation (contact Madeline via arpeggiata@yahoo.com)

This Saturday, June 3

Join us for Foothills Pride from 12-4 in Sunland Park on the corner of Foothill and Sherman Grove in Sunland. UUVerdugo will have a booth. This is a fun event with lots of fun and community engagement to be had.

Later this week, stay tuned for our June newsletter with a more comprehensive calendar of events.
