A few Sundays ago we had a great discussion about how the word "woke" has been weaponized, and now here is a fascinating NPR story on that same theme, starring Leadbelly and Erykah Badu.
I remember, back in 2017 or so, our previous minister, Rev. Gordon Bailey (now at UU Las Vegas, threatening to burst into flame any minute), delivered a sermon called "Are You Woke?" long before the co-opting and demonization of the word.
At the risk of getting too Biblical, one of the powers that God gave to Adam was the ability to name the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky. To name things is powerful, which is why words have great power, "rough-hew them as we will."
